Sensor Junction Blocks

Sensor junction blocks (also referred to as "distribution blocks" or "terminal blocks") are a simple way to consolidate wire connections from different types of control systems. They tend to have multiple connection points.

Junction blocks are used alongside machine equipment. They connect sensors and actuators to the controller.

We're proud to stock a great selection of wire distribution blocks from some renowned brands, like Balluff, HARTING, and Alpha Wire.

If you're looking for new distribution blocks, simply browse our catalog and start an order with us today. If there is anything else you need to know about our products before you buy, please don't hesitate to contact our friendly team.

How do sensor junction blocks work?

A sensor junction block is a connector that terminates a single wire per connection point (hence why it is sometimes termed a "terminal block"). You can use them to connect different electrical cables to create an electrical circuit. They are useful in both domestic and commercial applications.

The conductor of each cable is secured to a common clamping area on the distribution block, which may take the form of a metal enclosure or surface you can fix the cables to with a nut, screw, or a spring-loaded metal tab.

When using your distribution blocks, it's important to be aware of the amperage. Sensor junction boxes are rated in terms of amps, with 5, 20, and 30-amp ratings being common. The block's rating must match or be higher than the amperage of your circuit.

What are the different types of distribution blocks?

Sensor junction blocks can be applied to many different industries and appliances, but there are two main types:

  • Bussed distribution blocks: These sensor junction blocks are enclosed and can accommodate one larger input cable that can be split into smaller cables for branch circuits.
  • Independent distribution blocks: This type allows you to route multiple individual circuits through a single location because they are not connected.

Distribution blocks are also categorized according to how you can mount them. The three most common are:

  • PCB mounts: The housing is soldered directly to a PCB, with bare wires inserted into the module and secured using a clamp.
  • Barrier strips: If vibration is an issue, this may be most appropriate. Barrier strip terminal blocks require you to screw the terminal that accepts the wire and tighten it to the housing.
  • Feed-through: When you need a wire-to-wire connection, this may be best. It's commonly found in DIN rail mounted types. You will need to insert the two wires through opposite sides of the housing to form a connection.

What are the benefits of distribution blocks?

The main benefit is that a sensor junction block is a more efficient way of supplying power to various devices. Without the need for separate wiring in each device, you will have a much simpler, cleaner system – one that requires only one large wire on the input side. This wire links each of the connected devices to the power source.

Another reason to use them is that they can isolate a short-circuit incident, preventing a full shutdown.

And if you have a remote sensor block, you have the additional benefit of being able to relocate multiple sensors away from the interference of direct heat and vibration.

Why choose RS to supply your distribution blocks?

As one of North America's leading distributors of electrical components and equipment, supplying high-quality equipment is something you can rely on us for. You're sure to find the electrical distribution blocks you need in our range. You can filter according to the number of ports, the interface, and the sensor connection that you require.

With us, you can find sensor junction blocks to fit a variety of surfaces. These include DIN rail power distribution terminal blocks, which can be stacked next to each other to save space. The range also includes pluggable sensor junction blocks, a great solution if you need a circuit that can be broken quickly for testing and maintenance without any unwiring.

We're committed to providing excellent customer service. To uphold this, we offer same-day dispatch on many products and our simple returns policy is in place to minimize hassle if you wish to return your order.
